‘Beatbox composer’ to play at Beatcheck |
A human beatboxer who creates live musical scores using just his mouth will play at Beatcheck at Revolution Bar on Friday 19 September.MC Xander uses electrical gadgetry to loop beats, music and vocals all from his own vocal chords to create a capella music for the dance floor. The star was a hit when he played last year at Beatcheck, a night that has now been providing beats, breaks and underground dance music in Milton Keynes for over two years. Promoter Jason Charles said: “Beatboxers always seem to go down a treat in Milton Keynes, and there are few of them that can compete with Xander. “Seeing him create such complex music just with his mouth is something else, and to get the crowd going is unbelievable. I can’t wait to see him again.” MC Xander is London-based but has travelled the world to play as a solo artist or collaborate with anyone from chart names including Newton Faulkner to big dance music acts such as DJ Craze. The equipment he uses is nothing more than mic, a pedal controlled sampler, an FX box and his own vocal chords. He then records, loops and edits the beats, sounds and words there and then to create intricate, multilayered beats. His music sees spine-tingling, almost operatic vocals merge with Sanskrit chanting and beautiful choir-esque melodies to create a platform for his conscious rhymes to flow over the top. This creates a whole range of sounds from arab-esque devotional chanting through soulful reggae crooning, to breakneck drum and bass, jumpy breakbeat and ragga stylings. Stranger Mag, after catching his Glastonbury performance reported that “His voice was a revelation” and The Sun newspaper called it “The best beatbox display I have ever seen.” He is a welcome guest for Beatcheck, which has spent the last two years in its mission to inject culture into Milton Keynes’ sometimes grimly repetitive late night scene. By having a relaxed dress code and booking big name DJs from across the world, it is a welcome relief from the chain bar cheese-fests that the city has to offer. MC Xander will be joined on the night by the Beatcheck residents who will be providing their usual supply of cutting edge beats, breaks and basslines until way past a sensible bed time. Prepare to be entranced by this sonic shaman and come check our beats.
