This is Khaled Hosseini first novel. The kite runner spans a significant period of time in Afghanistan's history, from a time before the Solvent invades up to the most present time of the Taliban.

This book is an insight of what life was like growing up for Amir and Hassan.

It all begins in 1970 in Afghanistan. This is a story of father's and sons, friendships and betrayal, and the casualties of fate.

All Amir wants is to make his father proud of him. So he enters in to the local kite running competition with Hassan as his runner, all Amir has to do is fly his kite until it is the last one in the sky. On that day Amir and Hassan's friendship changes forever.

"I kept stealing glances at Baba sitting with Rahim Khan on the roof, wondering what he was he was thinking. Was he cheering for me? Or did a part of him enjoy seeing me fail? That was the thing about kite flying: your mind drifted with the kite"

Amir and Baba flee their home land for America, life is ok for them. Life for Amir is good but one day he has to return to his home land to discover that things are not always what they seem.

In my opinion this book gave me an insight in to a relationship within a family that is built on lies, and friendships that are changed forever through brutal attacks, and also it shows a life that is very different to one that most people can relate to. This is a good read.

I wont go over the books content again as the first reviewer did a good job. Dont be put off by the slow start. Couldnt put it down towards the end I rarely read novels - this is a good one and I shall be looking out for the film and Hosseinis next book.
