Britain has 1% of the world’s population and 20% of its CCTV cameras - 4.2 million cameras in all.

Many feel safe because of this, but violent crime is rising and even the government insists that sex crimes are much higher than reported. So what is the use of them, unless it is something more sinister.

The Royal Academy of Engineering said:

that lives could be put at risk by our big brother society. This is because any system that holds huge amounts of information is open to abuse.
There is also a risk with the radio frequency microchips to be used in ID cards and passports. They could be eavesdropped.

The government’s privacy watchdog commissioner, Richard Thomas, said

the government’s CCTV mania was creating a climate of suspicion.
