Milton Keynes Gallery 16 April – 8 June 2008 Current exhibiting artist Cathy Wilkes nominated for 2008 Turner Prize If you want to impress your partner, impress or confuse them, then take a trip down to Milton Keynes Gallery at CMK. OK I’m not the sharpest blade on a razor but I challenge anyone to observe the art at the gallery and explain to us all just what it means or why the artist has displayed such. But you must promise you’ll just go down there, not read any information or ask any of the staff what they know, because I asked them and on this particular item the've been left a little in the dark. This is because the artist Cathy Wilkes is very private and will only reveal that the work has to do with life subjects personal to herself, such as: birth, death love and loss, there is inherently a balance the artist strikes between courting narrative and tenaciously resisting it. I copied those last words from a leaflet. Impressive though eh! That’s what I’m saying. Get a bit of information and then take your partner down there. They won’t know what hit them. Or you could both go there unprepared, that would be funny. That way you’d both have to use your imagination and try to understand the strangeness of it all. The Gallery is split into three galleries the Cube, Middle and Long Gallery. In the Cube Gallery there are five pieces around the walls, the pieces are named: She’s Pregnant Again, Paintings, Teenage Mother, Listen to God and B/Y which was a microwave oven door having two saucers glued to it.The Middle Gallery from what I gathered was pond reeds laid on the ground in burial fashion having possibly something to do with the pain Moses’ mother went through when she let Moses go down the river in the little basket, and how Cathy as being a mother could imagine and understand her grief. The Long Gallery as you can see in the pictures is like the previous galleries, very surreal. I couldn’t help but laugh when I was there, thinking that maybe I could throw together a bunch of stuff and get paid for it. But I couldn’t help thinking that there was a deeper meaning of which I couldn’t grasp. I know that Cathy Wilkes doesn’t expect anyone to get the art and that she’d be happy if someone was to walk away with their own interpretation. So whatever you find, if you are like me and like a little of the bizarre then you should like this. The galleries open from: tues - sat 10am - 5pm, sun 11am - 5pm thurs open late, with a Sunday Film Screening on the first floor, titled (most women never experience) mon it's closed. They showcase new artists about every seven weeks. Born and raised in Belfast, Wilkes is one of a generation of artists who was educated in Glasgow and emerged at the forefront of British visual arts practice in the mid 1990s. And from the 90's has been showcasing around the UK and abroad. The exhibition, which comprises new and recent work, will be accompanied by an illustrated catalogue.
