Milton Keynes Contemporary – WHITEWALL
A collection of paintings by Egyptian artist Nazir Tanbouli, inspired by the new city of Milton Keynes, is being displayed on WHITEWALL, a contemporary art space in thecentre:mk shopping centre. The collection of artworks will be on display until 6 July and takes the imaginative influence and human characteristic of Milton Keynes and its citizens and presents them within a framework of mythical fantasia.
Born in Alexandria, Egypt, Nazir’s work encompasses drawing, murals, large-scale paintings and installation based on his observations and experience of a place. The exhibition at WHITEWALL challenges the viewer’s imagination to construct a new mythology for Milton Keynes with local heroes and legendary figures.
“Nazir is the latest in a strong line of artists who have had work commissioned for the WHITEWALL,” commented Jackie Tracey, Events Manager at thecentre:mk. “Nazir’s work explores the idea that communities are built on a collaborative form of storytelling, where transient gossip turns into urban myth. Given the relatively recent history of Milton Keynes, it’s fascinating to see Nazir’s understanding of the myth making process in a new town.”
A catalogue of this project is available with text by cultural commentator Judith Palmer. Further details on the work of Nazir Tanbouli can be found from www.nariztanbouli.com for more information on the WHITEWALL visit www.miltonkeynescontemporary.co.uk
