The incident happened at about 11.15am as the man walked his dog along the river in Haversham by the viaduct.
The victim saw another man walking towards him with three dogs, so he stopped to put his dog on a lead. As he bent down the offender shouted at the victim ‘Why are you hitting that dog’. The offender then ran towards the victim and pushed him hard three times against a handrail on the bridge. He then grabbed the victim’s walking pole and threw it into the river.
During the attack the victim suffered chest pains and started to lose consciousness. A witness, who the victim had stopped to speak to just before the attack, stayed with the victim until he felt well enough to walk home.
The offender is white, in his late thirties to early forties, 6ft and of athletic build. He had ginger or fair stubble on his face and was wearing a black cowboy-style hat made of felt, a black T-Shirt and light-coloured knee-length shorts.
Police are keen to talk to the witness who helped the man as it’s believed he witnessed the attack take place. They would also like to hear from anyone else who was in the area at the time and may have seen the offender.
