Don’t be a victim of crime this summer

milton keynes police officer28 May 2008. Milton Keynes residents and city visitors are being reminded to protect their homes and cars from opportunist thieves with summer approaching.

Residents are more likely to leave windows and doors open during the warmer weather, but should remember that thieves can wriggle through any gap larger than the size of a human head.

Please lock all doors and windows if you go out.

Ed Allington, from the Milton Keynes crime reduction office, said: “Occupants should never leave garages or sheds unlocked. They should remember to lock tools and ladders away so that thieves cannot use them to break in to their home, as well as considering installing a battery operated shed or garage alarm.”

Police are also urging motorists to make sure that their cars are secure and that nothing is left on display when they leave them.

Car crime nationally is decreasing, but there is still a need to be vigilant and take precautions. Make these precautions part of your routine and you will decrease your risk of becoming a victim:

  • Remove all items of value from your vehicle when you park
  • Lock doors and close windows
  • Park in a safe place, which should be well-lit, preferably with CCTV
  • Keep your keys safe at home
Over the past couple of years, sat nav systems have been a favourite for car criminals, who can sell them on to handlers very easily and get a good price for them. If you have a sat nav and plan to use it, officers make the following suggestions:
  • Remove your sat nav from the vehicle when it is being left unattended
  • Remove the cradle/sat nav holder from the windscreen and use a duster to wipe away the tell tale marks from the windscreen
  • Once your valuables are removed, put a notice in your car indicating that there is nothing of value left in the vehicle
