One of the great plays of the decade, Alan Bennett’s The History Boys comes to Milton Keynes Theatre in the first major revival since the original production which opened in May 2004 at the National Theatre. The show received rave reviews and a sell-out run and went on to become one of their biggest ever hits, winning no less than 20 major awards including both Olivier and Tony Awards for Best New Play. Not only that the play was made into a film in 2005.

This Theatre Royal Bath production is directed by Christopher Luscombe who achieved tremendous success with his production of Alan Bennett’s Enjoy which recently playes to great acclaim in Milton Keynes.

The History Boys is set in a school in the North of England where a boisterous bunch of bright, funny sixth-form boys at Cutler’s Grammar School are in pursuit mainly of sex and sport, but also an Oxbridge place, despite the best efforts of their endearingly eccentric teacher, Hector.

In Alan Bennett’s play, staffroom rivalry and the anarchy of adolescence provoke insistent questions about history and how you teach it; about education and its purpose. A story of learning, in the broadest sense of the word, The History Boys is both a celebration of the buoyancy of youth and an elegy to lost traditions, providing a rich vein of comedy.
