What are dry cleaners to you? Aren't they shops that magically makes stains leave suits?
Not just a suit cleaner
There is so much more to the dry cleaners of today. Dry cleaners are much more than just suit cleaners. Many textiles used in the home are delicate but don't lend themselves to being hand washed or subjected to water. Rayon, and textiles such as velvet are particularly sensitive to being mistreated when water is nearby; thereby demanding gentle hand washing or the avoidance of water altogether. A cry for dry cleaning!
Many fabrics at home may collect dust because they are difficult to maintain. Furnishing such as velvet curtains may inadvertently become neglected leading to staining along their edges. Bulk may preclude regular curtain cleaning – especially if their length is a full drop and of a material that is sensitive to water.
Modern dry cleaners
Nowadays a dry cleaners may not offer what used to be considered traditional dry cleaning. Today's dry cleaners ought to be considered to be masters of specialist fabric care. Cleaning a sofa cover and curtain cleaning are something that a good dry cleaning establishment can offer. Getting a duvet clean is difficult; if only for the sheer size and weight if cleaned at home.
You might not wish to consider it, but the chances are that you have many thousands of other occupants in bed with you every night!
Due to the warmth and moisture within your duvet and pillows, they are excellent habitats for dust mites, along with what they leave behind. This creates a need for regular duvet cleaning.
Dust mites produce allergens which are often the cause of allergic reactions. For some people this can trigger asthma attacks or other respiratory problems.
Various experts recommend that your duvet and pillows are regularly cleaned. At least every six months is considered good. Having them cleaned at a good dry cleaners will ensure that effective sterilisation and removal of allergens takes place. Additionally, duvet and pillows are refreshed, revived and renewed.
Now you can dry clean sofa covers, duvets, pillows and more!
So now duvets and pillows can be added to fragile materials (rayon, velvet, etc.), curtain cleaning, sofa covers and suits. Dry cleaners are more than just suit cleaners! Another sound reason to consider using dry cleaners may be to entrust garments, bedding and the like to experts who can clean them thoroughly without causing damage.
A duvet can be washed in a household washing machine. It isn't a particularly efficient way to clean it and is unlikely to address the issues that make it a good idea to clean it regularly in the first place. In addition, it is an awfully easy way to overload one's washing machine as many duvets can hold a lot of water, become immensely heavy, and consequently place a great strain on a washing machine drum's bearing.
Result: no real effect upon the duvet and premature ageing of your washing machine.
