English MVP Joins lions

The 5’10” English point guard was voted the best player in English Division One last term and celebrated his first England Cap this past week with the news he will be joining the Lions in the British Basketball League

Gill, 26, is a graduate of the University of Bolton, he had a spell in the Danish top league averaging 10 points a game but last season averaged 23 points and just shy of 5 assists a game on his way to League MVP honours with his home town club, the Manchester Magic and capturing the Playoff Crown.

Lions’ Head Coach Mike New commented, “I am delighted to acquire Stefan, we knew about him and his athletic ability but this past season in Manchester he has really blossomed, he came to trials, dominated and is rewarded with a contract, hats off to him for not settling for playing at home and success at the EBL level, he wants to challenge himself against the best this country has to offer and we are confident he will do well”.

The Moss-Side born guard is currently away with the English national team playing in Ireland and on Friday contributed 20 points to England’s win over the host nation. Lions Chief Executive, Vince Macaulay added, “It is not surprising that Mike’s first signing is a young English player, we pride ourselves in bringing young players to the fore, what Mike has done with the Academy has been great and we intend to bring more young players to the club”

The Lion’s first game of the new season sees them entertain the Leicester Riders on Sunday 26th September (tip-off 5.00pm), but at the moment it is not clear where the Lions will play their home games, the Club will continue to keep fans informed on any developments.
