Event Celebrates the History of Black Music |

As part of Black History Month, which takes place throughout October, Milton Keynes Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is holding an event for everyone who lives in and around Milton Keynes to celebrate the huge cultural contribution that diverse ethnic groups have brought to the UK and beyond through music. 7.00pm, 29 October 2009, Church of Christ the Cornerstone. Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Nina Simone, Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley though to Dizzee Rascal are just a few of the black icons who have made a massive contribution to music in the western world. Esther Valentine, Matron at Milton Keyens Hospital and Equality and Diversity Lead, said: “Black History Month provides a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the diversity and richness of culture in Milton Keynes, and reflect on past acheivements. “Local people, NHS staff and community groups - anyone who enjoys live music - is welcome to attend the event, which will celebrate a whole host of music genres. Many musical styles will be celebrated: African Drumming, Negro Spiritual, Soul, Jazz, Blues, Rap, Hip Hop, Reggae, Ska, Rock 'n’ Roll and the like. “Black music continues to play an integral part in the development of modern music - pop music was born of rock 'n' roll, and rock 'n' roll was born of black music.” The show chronicles the history of the journey of black music from the sub-Saharan Africa to the western world, and the impact of that journey on society. The performance will be supported with poetry and dance. Local artist Yaw Asiyama is the producer of the show. 7.00pm, 29 October 2009, Church of Christ the Cornerstone.
