A groundworks contractor may be engaged to improve or provide drainage, demolition, site clearance, excavation and foundations work, or road-building. A car park for a proposed build may be required. Groundwork will form an important part of the initial phase of any construction project.

While an underground car park might be considered a full building its own right, it will require excavation with dedicated equipment and expertise. Additionally, any car park requires a road to access it - unless you are considering a car park for flying cars!

The foundations of construction start well before the beginning!

The equipment and skills required for groundworks prior to construction can be rather specialised. Whilst road paving slabs or blocks can be considered within the remit of a construction company; laying tarmac, or hardcore, would be groundwork allowing further construction by a contractor.

There may be a need for demolition and subsequent site clearance to allow construction to take place if the land is already occupied by a structure. A suitable road infrastructure to allow both demolition and the resulting clearance and removal of debris is required before construction can commence. Enter the groundworks contractor!

Demolition goes well, but drainage would help clearance immensely

The nature of the proposed construction site might require improved drainage. Once construction starts, no contractor wants to park their lorry to be unloaded only to find it has become bogged down. There has to be an expertise that ensures things such as drainage put in place remains capable once the construction is completed and that does not impinge negatively upon surrounding areas.

A great deal of money can go into a construction project. It is seriously more cost-effective to get foundations, drainage, road access, paving surface preparation/layout, and car park areas, all correct before construction rather than ripping things up to correct them afterwards. Demolition of a newly completed construction is not good!

Foundations paving the way forward, and beyond!

Good groundwork might not be apparent until towards the end, or after, a construction project. For example - an area prepared for paving will be easier to lay if prepared correctly with forethought. It will remain as laid if the foundations are up to the required specification - which a good groundworks contractor will be able to determine and adhere to.

The same extends to all aspects of groundwork - whatever the construction atop of it, it can only be as good as the foundations upon which the construction is sat.

Groundworks at the start, groundworks at the end; the road to clever construction

Groundworks, while being in from the start of a construction, can also be part of the final stages. A groundwork contractor may be better placed for the landscaping of the finished construction project and final clearance of building debris resulting from the construction process. A groundwork contractor might be the same contractor which laid the foundations for the road infrastructure, paving and car park areas, and they might be the same contractor and best equipped to provide the final road, paving and/or car park surfaces.

Whatever the construction project - a shopping mall of block of stables - it can both look and be good. The part of the construction project that ensures both will be the groundworks which preceded it. An expert groundwork contractor will pay dividends in overall costs and reputation.
