On Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 May, local care agency, Progress Children's Services, will be looking for homes for five- to eighteen-year-old disabled young people. Gambado children's activity centre in Knowlhill is generously supporting their search on both of these days with free entry for both children and adults. This will raise awareness of underprivileged children with physical and severe learning disabilities in Milton Keynes and the surrounding areas, and provide an opportunity to find out how people can help by becoming foster carers. We understand what a mammoth decision it can be for someone to decide to commit to caring for a disabled young person. We are not asking people to sign up on the spot at Gambado. It is simply an opportunity to ask more questions about the practicalities of what it feels like to be a foster parent, in an informal setting. The centre will provide a safe and fun environment for children and grandchildren to play whilst adults talk to our teamsaid Parmjeet Dhanoa of Progress. These young people need foster care for many reasons. It may be due to ill parents or siblings, bereavement, abuse or neglect. Whether a foster home is needed for just a few days or for the long term, it is vital that they get the support and routine they need, as quickly as possible. {rokzoom album=|learning_disablilty Milton Keynes|title=|Progress Children's Services looks for homes to help learning disablilty in Milton Keynes|}images/stories/keyne-eye/articles/learning_disablilty1.jpg{/rokzoom} There is a common misconception that foster carers are a particular age or gender. Providing candidates can demonstrate skills and experience in dealing with challenging issues, anyone over eighteen years-of-age can look after children. It is more common however, for over twenty-fives to become carers as they have more life experience and there is an appropriate age difference between both parties.concluded Parmjeet.
