Local business donates £10,000 to World Vision |
On 24th August 2010, Anthony Lee, head of thriving Beckenham-based business The Student Support Centre, met with the Public Engagement Director of global charity World Vision. He was handing over a cheque for £10,000. The Student Support Centre is committed to social responsibility and improving educational opportunities for children both in the UK and less fortunate areas. The money has gone directly to the Nalitabari Education Project in northern Bangladesh. Children face a difficult future – a survey conducted by World Vision found 42% of the population there were illiterate, and only 3% had completed their Secondary School Certificate. The project has transformed Nalitabari: funding from The Student Support centre has contributed to the first Education Fair, helping to highlight the importance of education for people in the community. With the money donated, training sessions have been run for primary school teachers, equipping them with new skills and techniques. One of the most significant changes has been that 338 children have been able to attend school and 1,066 have received funding to continue their education. All of this would not have been possible without the funding. Educational centres across Nalitabari have also been given vital materials such as books and notepads. All of these developments plus regular workshops have meant that education has been given priority in Nalitabari. Anthony says: “Our involvement with World Vision and our contributions to the Nalitabari Education Project is extremely important to us. We’re dedicated to helping children’s education not just in the UK but in developing countries as well.’ World Vision Account Manager Mark Jones said: “World Vision is delighted to connect The Student Support Centre to the Nalitabari Education Project. The response and the enthusiasm shown from right across all areas of the Student Support Centre has been tremendous! It is great to see our supporters show such commitment to help improve the lives of children who are living in desperate poverty. Through their generous support, we are able to work with communities in Bangladesh to make a lasting difference for the next generation.” |
