17 June 2008Sergeant Mark Ridley has been named Milton Keynes Community Officer of the Year 2008 after building excellent links with Fishermead estate residents.
Over the past year, Sergeant Ridley and his team have enjoyed success in tackling drugs in the area, and have improved partnership working with local partners.
Sergeant Ridley, who has been working on the estate for the past three years, said: “I was very shocked to hear about the award, and feel very flattered that people took the time to put my name forward.
“When I first came here, there was little rapport between the police and the community, which meant very little local intelligence. Now, people regularly stop and talk to us.”
He continued: “I am part of a superb neighbourhood team, and we get a fantastic response from local residents, who are pleased to see us out and about. We have also built a good working relationship with the Fishermead hostel for the homeless.”
One of the people who nominated Mark said: “He works tirelessly for a safer neighbourhood. He is easy to reach, knowledgeable, cares about his local community and shows a lot of enthusiasm.”
Chief Superintendent Alan Baldwin, commander of Milton Keynes Basic Command Unit, praised Sergeant Ridley for his work with the community.
He said: “The fact that more than one resident took the time to write in and nominate Mark for this award shows just how much his contribution is valued.
“All of our community officers work very hard to make a difference in the areas that they police. It’s great when this work is recognised and rewarded by the very people that we are here to serve.”
