Question:
why is the kingsmead bus service not run reaguarly ? its is awful
claire.
Answer:
Staff shortages. Things may improve now that Arriva have taken over with their greater resources. Bus services had a major upheval after the 1985 de regulation which sold off the National Bus Company into smaller parts. The effect has been the emergence of two major groups in the Milton Keynes area; Arriva and First. Milton Keynes, however, was served for years by the independent MK Metro.

Given the high cost of housing and difficulty of living on bus drivers pay in Milton keynes, MK Metro did suprisingly well, but without massive governemnt subsidy and disincentives to car users, bus services struggle and resoiurces are concentrated on main routes.

Question:
Hi there Can you tell me if it is possible to walk from the Novotel in Milton Keynes to the main station to get a bus to the bowl and how long roughly would it take. Also do you know how far the hotel is from the coachway. Many thanks for you help.
Annette Smithson.
Answer:
Novotel is in Layburn Court, Saxon St, MK13 7RA. It is over 2km fom the Rail and Bus Stations 9 these stations are close to each other. The Bowl is about another 3km further on. You could make the journey onm foot in under 45 minutes, if you are fit. The grid road system lends itself to easy navigation. The hotel will be able to provide you with a map, though I caution against walking on your own. The Redways can be risky at the best of time and the main carriageways carry a lot of traffic.

Question:
Do you know if you are allowed into Milton Keynes bowl with a digital camera for the upcoming Bon Jovi concert?
Elle.
Answer:
Most venues are against this as artists like control of their image, for financial and presentation reasons. However, the press have are allowed in to big events because it is valuable publicity for star and promoter. They, however, are part of the system. As a private person, I am not aware of amy law permitting the promoters from searching your belongings for anything but security reasons. If they find a digital camera, they can not assume that you mean to take photos and are not likely to be interested. If the eprformers are very touchy about photos being taken without permission, the stewars might be vigilant and try to confiscate cameras or reprimand you for using them. However, on a site as big as the Bowl and with so many other serious management issues, they would be hard pressed to stop you- unless you took photos right in front of them. Stewards are supposed to have
idenifiable clothing or badges and if someone claims to be such without verification, you can ignore them- of course they might not like that. Use your judgement.

Question:
How far in miles are the London Heathrown and Gatwick airports from Milton Keynes
Patricia.
Answer:
Gatwick is about 33 miles south of Heathrow, using the M25 and M23. Heathrow is about 48 miles south of Milton Keynes, using the M25 anti clockwise to the M23. So Gawtwick is about 81 miles from Milton Keynes. Both M23 and M25 motorways are prone to high levels of congestion, but in this very urban area the by roads are pretty awful.

Question:
What would be a sensible time to arrive in Milton Keynes in order to park and get to the Milton Keynes Bowl for gates opening at 2pm?
A. Hamer.
Answer:
There's always a lot of traffic. I suggest you drive to Milton Keynes as early as you can, the feasibility of that depends on how far away you live. Try to get to Milton Keynes by 12.00am. That should give you time to relax and park.
Guru.

Question:
what is the quickest route to milton keynes from london by car?
Paul Bryant.
Answer:
Traffic is always an issue, but the quickest route is normally the M1, exit at junction 13. The A5 Watling Street is the next best choice. I don't know where you are coming from in London, but it's easy enough to get north on the M25, or out of North London on the North Circular. If you are coming from the East End, M11 direction, take the M25 up to the motorway. You
could avoid the M1 and A5 by following the M25 to the A41 junction, near Hemel Hempstead and head up to Milton Keynes via Aylesbury. That can be a quieter route and avoid any congestion on the M1. The simplest and most direct routecourse is still the M1. If you want the Newport Pagnell side of Milton Keynes, come off at Junction 14.
Guru.

Question:
Hi! How far away from Milton Keynes Bowl is the Premier Travel Inn Dunstable South? Thanks!
Paula.
Answer:
The Dunstable Premier is nearly 15 miles from the, but its location makes it handy for Milton keynes and the, Bowl- being just off Junction 11 on the A505. The full address is 350, Luton Road and there is a Virgin Coach link to the rail station- which is near the Bowl. If driving, head for Junction 13 and then take the A421, following it all the way to Elfield Roundabout, where you turn right and the Bowl is 300 yards along on the right. The Premier Travel Inn's phone number is 01582 664114.
Guru.

Question:
Where would be the best place to park for the Milton Keynes Bowl if we want an easy get away from the concert afterwards?
A. Hamer.
Answer:
There will be on site parking, but there is also parking at the railway station and cityt centre- about 1.5 miles away, and directions further back on my pages. Extra buses will connect station and Bowl, so I'd probably go for that. Parking in the retail areas near the Bowl are subject to various charges and restrictions.
Guru.

Question:
please can you tell me the full postal adress with post code for the national bowl
Pamela Day.
Answer:
The National Bowl, Watling Street, Milton Keynes, UK MK5 8AA
Guru.

Question:
What is the best way to travel from ashford to milton keynes national bowl?
Sarah Homewood.
Answer:
If you are driving, take the M20 to the M25. from here travel anti clockwise, through Dartford Tunnel, to the M1. Exit the M1 at junction 13, follow the A421 (H8 Standing way ), signed Buckingham, until you reach the A5 junction at Elfield Park roundabout. Drive along here for about 300 hundred yards and the Bowl is on your right, though you may have to turn right at the next roundabout- the Bowl roundabout- and gain access through gates that will be signed on the right. There's be a lot of traffic and signs, so if you get this close, you've made it.

Alternatively, Ashford is well served with trains to Victoria, Charing Cross and London Bridge. Victoria has the easiest tube connection via the Victorai line to Euston, where there is a good connecting service to Milton Keynes. Special buses will eb available from the train station to the Bowl- bus stands are in the station forecourt and the Bus station is across a road
on the other side of the station square. Your ony difficulty would be getting back across London by train. Advice about hotles is also abvailable on my pages.

Question:
Hi, im going to the robbie williams concert in milton keynes and am unsure of the best way to travel, I live in lancing west sussex and i am interested in getting the train or coach, many thanks
Gemma Dolan
Answer:
Coaches aren't good. you would have to catch the airport service from Gatwick, calling at Heathrwo, Luton and Milton Keynes- cheaper, but not cheerful in my view. There are three rail options, I wouldn't recoomend the Thames link service because of all the changing crossing London. you could avoid London by taking Southern rail to East Croydon, and changing for Watford. From here you change for Silverlink to Central Milton Keynes- where there will be buses to the concert, which is only a couple of miles
away. The third rail option, which I have used and found quite good, is train from Lancing to Victoria, take the Victoria line tube to Euston and there is a good choice of trains to Milton Keynes- including expresses, but Silver Link is cheapest and a through ticket price will limit your options according to what you pay. I would not recommend this route late at night as London tubes are risky places. Your best bet is via Watford- more info on travel line 0870 6082608.

Question:
Is there racism against black people in milton keynes.
TC.
Answer:
The Police or council will have exact figures as to the latest annual fugures of recorded incidents against black people, The short Answer: is to define racism as ' perceived prejudicial treatment on the basis of skin or other ethnic differences, by others.' Add to this something like, physical or clothing differences between minorities and mainstream populations can create fear, suspicion and ill treatment. In Milton Keynes the problem is not severe, but it is never acceptable.' The term black people probably needs defining as those of African or Afro Carribean origin.

Question:
What is the full address for The Coachways ? Page from submitted from
Debby.
Answer:
I am not sure that it has one. It is owned by Milton Keynes Council and operated by National Express. It is located off junction 14 of the M1, just east of the motorway, in Buckinghamshire. Coachways, Junction 14, MI Motorway, Near Newport Pagnell, Bucks, would suffice for any postal or directional requirements you may have. General inquiries would be best directed to National Express or the MK Council.
Guru.

Question:
Driving from Oxford. How do I find the coachway bus terminal of the M1 once Im in MK
Mike gray
Answer:
Assuming you leave Oxford on the A34, head for the A43. You could either cut through Bicester along the B4100 or cut bewteen junctions 9 and 10 of the M40 to reach the A43. Take the A422 from the Brackley ring road, heading for Buckingham, Old Stratford and Stony Stratford. Don't take the A421 from Brackley because you will get caught up on the wrong side of Milton Keynes. As you approach the Old Stratford roundabout you will see a long thin cycleway bridge crossing the 422, for Deanshanger. About half a mile further on is a large roundabout. Get into the middle lane and take the third exit. which is the A5 heading for Milton Keynes. head along this road fro about six miles and take the second exit which is signposted Milton Keynes south. From this large roundabout, take the second exit which takes you on to Portway and is signed for M1 South ( Junction 14 ) and the Coachway. Coachway is well signed and just east of the M1.

Question:
i'm driving from gillingham in kent to milton keynes for the monsters of rock 3rd of june do you know the directions to the bowl its self?
Mark Stanbridge
Answer:
From Gillingham, I expect you will use the M25 and then MI to junction 13. You will be directed to a roundabout on the A421 where the sign posting is not wonderful, but basically you are taking the first turning right from it. Follow the signs to Central Milton Keynes along the A421. Continue along this road through the city. It becomes H8 in the grid system and is the road to Oxford. The V roads intersect and count down in the direction that you are travelling. Turn right at Elfield Park roundabout and go along the V4 Watling Street- the old A5 which you would be on if you had decided to come in on the old London Road. The National Bowl is about 350 metres ahead on the right. If you pass it, you will arrive at the Bowl roundabout and can loop back. There are also entrances and exits if you turn right along Chaffron Way, H7. I don't know what the entrance system will be on the day, but it will all be well sign posted, though traffic is usually very heavy on these occasions. For further information type in your requirements to www.multimap.com.

Question:
Just got onto your site. Who is Milton Keynes and what is his claim to fame. Interesting site.
Art Ryan
Answer:
Milton Keynes is a large 1960s new town, often refered to as a city, though for some odd reason has never been given official city status in spite of its size and complexity. Though it is not a person, the name Milton Keynes originally applied to a village now within the new town boundaries and renamed Middleton to avoid confusion. The original village name is associated with the Norman ancestors of the famous Englsih economist John Maynard Keynes who were connected with the original village settlement. Milton was a writer who, to my knowledge, had nothing to do with the original Milton Keynes.

I arrive at London Luton airport at 21.15 and I need to get to the Holiday Inn at 500 saxon gate west, milton keynes hotel but I don't know how to. I've spoke to many people on the phone but they were no use. Please help me.
James Cathcart
Answer:
Catch the high frequency Virgin Coach link to Central Milton Keynes shopping centre, getting off in Midsummer Boulevard. Walk west through the shopping centre and you'll come quickly to a crossroads. Cross the road, via the underpass, and you will find Holiday Inn just to your left. Alternatively, if you get off at the train station, walk toward the bus station directly opposite. Turn right, at the end of the road turn left and walk straight along the boulevard toward the shopping centre- in this case the Holiday Inn is on your right. It is quite a large building and is only a few minutes walk in either direction- there are lots of taxix at the tarin station, but if you are fit it isn't worth paying.

It's a unitary authority, but it is historically Bucks, it's surrounded by Bucks and has some administrative links with Bucks. Question:
Can you tell me the best way to travel (by bus or rail) from heathrow airport to Milton Keynes.
Margaret
Answer:
A Heathrow Direct Bus oeprates from the Central Bus Station in terminal 4, but can be hard to find because of poor signage. It is service 707 and stops at Milton Keynes Coachway just off the M1. Another service will bring you into Central Milton Keynes. I am not sure of the price but will check if you have problems. You can also take the National Express for £15 return to Watford Junction Train station where you pick up Virgin rail service to Milton Keynes Central. You will need to log on to www.virginrail.com for the train fares and discounts. Another possibility is by Piccadilly line tune train to London Leicester Square, change there for Euston tube station, change again for Euston mainline and then to Central Milton Keynes. I am not sure of the price to date, but it would be the most expensive option and takes you right through London- not a good idea. Check www.virginrail.com for Euston Central Milton Keynes return.

It's always possible to get helicopters to fly you places, depends how much money you have to spend. Also depends where you are starting out from. You don't mention the concert details or date so I don't know if any special flights have been arranged or how close to the venue you wish to arrive.

Question:
how many patients do doctors accept in bletchley?
lucy cooper
Answer:
It depends on the size of the doctors list. Some surgeries will take more than others. One doctor may take over 1000 patients. There is a shortage of GPs at the moment and surgeries will employ locums to plug shortages in their manpower, these may be people looking for partnerships or those near to retirement- keeping their hand in. We are also poaching doctors from eastern Europe and Third World Counties to compensate for the fact that we don't train enough here and because science teaching is in decline.

Basically surgeries are supposed to provide, under Primary Care Trust guidance and rules, care for those living in their catchment area. This means that practices, rather than individual doctors, must provide care for the people of Bletchley regardless of numbers. Doctors practices are run as private businesses. However, the system is struggling to cope and doctors probably have too many patients to cope with. When Milton Keynes was being developed, it waited over 10 years for a hospital and expansion will pose serious burdens on health care at hospital and GP level. In my view this is because the money is directed to the wrong place and targets are very misleading and easily manipulated..

Question:
Im 14 i want a job in a shop or cafe in milton keynes either working a few hours after school some days or on the weekend. What sort of places will employ a 14 year old and how do i get in touch with them?
Kathleen
Answer:
You need a work permit before you can gain employment in the kind of places you are thinking of. You are a little young for the major stores but may find opportunities in smaller local shops and cafes. Presumably you won't want to travel too far from home. Look on local shopping centre advertising boards, the sort you find in newsagents. You may be able to find work behind the scenes as there are certain limits as to the kind of work available for the under 16s.

Find information on Milton Keynes for a family who would like to move there. (E.g., the website addresses for local schools, estate agents, cinemas, sports centres.)
Claire Elworthy
Answer:
The first thing to do is select an area where you would like to live. You need to visit the city to get some idea of the environment and its different locales. To get an idea of prices you could log onto www.rightmove.com. There are also letting options and a number of estate agents are mentioned on my web page if you look back. Once you have chosen your area and found a home, you should contact the local council- who's contact details are also on this page. They will advise you on school catchment areas and other services. The estate agents will also have knowledge of local facilities including health centres.

Question:
What year was the grid system designed for public transpot?
john shanks
Answer:
Going back to the earliest days, the idea was it was to have approximately half mile grid squares idea so you would never be more than quarter mile from public transport. Main roads were represented as h or v (horizontal or vertical) on drawing board hence numbering system- roads running either east-west or north-south were also given reasonable names, as part of the 1967 plan. If you lived in Bradwell Common, you were expected to use the underpass and work in Rooksley. Planners envisaged a living over the shop situation, but didn't work because is a service city, food packing etc. Marshall Amplifiers are one of the few traditional manufacturing employers.

Certain parts of the woods- especially the country and golf club- may be off limits and you should purchase an ordnance survey map to be on the safe side.

Question:
Could you assist, where I can get a perfect location to open an italian restaurant please. I know that there's a lot of franchised resto but I want to start or planning to start a proper italian restaurant. Many thanks.
emile cryer
Answer:
It depends how much you have to invest. Bletchley and Wolverton are the poor relations in the city area. However, there is investment going their way. Bletchley has good prospects with the new football stadium and a new aril link. It could offer the lowest start up costs. Stony Stratford has more middle class elements who enjoy a wide range of eating out opportunities. For prospects in the more lucrative city centre, you should contact estate agents and shopping and snow dome management. It would also be worth talking to the local palnning office to discuss the limitations of particular properties and lcoations.

This depends which way you go. The bus deviates a bit and takes around two hours. Via Wellingborough. Depends where you are going from Milton Keynes, but it's around 60 miles, maybe a bit less. It's a pretty ride in places. The A421 to A1 route is longer, but it is a faster road- although road works at the Black Cat roundabout are slowing everything down. The Bus goes from CMK- see photo.

Question:
Can you please tell me the historical background behind Willen Lakeside Park in Milton Keynes please?
kimberley
Answer:
The potential for water sports was seen at the earliest planning stages of Milton Keynes, because there were so many old brick workings called knot holes. Willen Lake was developed, in the first place, to facilitate drainage on the flat landscape which would otherwise be very prone to flooding. Developing the lake for leisure and water sports was a natural second stage and now over a million people visit the site every year. A miniature railway completes the idylic scene.

You want Milton Keynes to Luton airport service. I think the service number is 899 and it is painted in the Virgin colour with the Virgin name painted on its side. The bus departs from Luton on the Bute St side of the Arndale Centre, near the railway station and runs along the M1 between Junction 12, near the L & D Hospital and Junction 13 and then into Milton Keynes city centre, stopping near the Point and then on to MK Railway Station.. Question:
Hello guru, I am coming from london and wanting to know can i get from milton to silverstone ciruit by bus ? if yes how and where would i find the info ...If not i there any other way i could get there for eg hire a car for the day or so forth .. by the way this is for the grand prix 06 .. thanks mate
thomas from australia
Answer:
Sillverstone circuit lays off the A43 between Twcester and Brackley. Your travel agent should be able to book you a car from Heathrow, if that is where you are landing. If you are already in London, just book with someone like Hertz or Avis. There may be smaller local car hire firms. From London the easiest route is M40 to junction 10 and it is a well sign posted 20 minute run from there, but parking is difficult. If you drive up the M1, come of at junction 13 and head for Milton Keynes. This is not a well designed junction in my view and very busy, the A421 is also a horrible little road and you wouldn't think it was a main route.

Weaving through Milton Keynes can be a pain, there a lots of roundabouts and you head for Buckingham. There will be loads of signs. The nearest rail stations are Northampton and Milton Keynes ( in both cases you take the Northampton train from London Euston ) , but public transport from both is inadequate. The same problem applies if you take a coach from London, Victoria. There are helicopter services, but they are expensive. For further information check out www.silverstone-circuit.co.uk Good luck.
