Milton Keynes Police Helmet10 November 2008 - Five children’s groups from across Milton Keynes spent a day with the Thames Valley Police Mounted Section on 30 October.

The children painted a mural at the stables of the Mounted Section expressing how they see the police. The theme was ‘police through children’s eyes’. The children also had the opportunity to meet the horses and look around a police car.

PC Hannah Davies, who helped to organise the event, said: “Despite the cold weather, the kids were really enthusiastic and seemed to have fun doing the painting. They especially enjoyed meeting the horses and looking around the police car.

“The idea came from one of our horse grooms. It was about giving the children from the community an opportunity to meet us and get an idea of what we do, as well as providing something fun for them to do during half term week.”

The following children’s groups took part:

  • Stony Stratford Children’s Centre.
  • Cold Harbour, from Bletchley.
  • The Warren, from the Lakes Estate.
  • Allsorts, from Grange Farm.
  • Netherfield Children’s Centre.
The stable mural will now be used to help the Mounted Section to train police horses to get used to bright colours and objects.

The Mounted Section has nine horses which are ridden by a sergeant and nine PCs.

They provide:

  • A mounted public order response across the Force.
  • Support to neighbourhoods with targeted high-visibility patrols.
  • A response to rural and urban searches initiated by search coordinators.
  • Mounted escort protection at military and royal events.
