29th August 2008 Patients who attend the physiotherapy gym at Milton Keynes Hospital NHS Foundation Trust are set to receive gifts of sweets and biscuits from the city’s Muslim Community to mark the beginning of Ramadan. The Chairman of Islamic Arts Heritage and Culture Organisation Mr Anouar Kassim will donate the biscuits to recovering patients on 3rd September at 10.30am. In addition to promoting patient independence and speeding up recovery, the physiotherapy gym sessions offer participants the chance to relax and talk with volunteers, staff and other patients in a relaxed, positive, atmosphere. The Physiotherapy Department runs the exercise service that speeds up recovery, encourages patients to get up and about and promotes independence. The service gets patients off the ward as soon as they are able and gives them the chance to exercise under professional guidance. Adult inpatients from across the hospital, such as the elderly, amputees, brain injury patients, and those with orthopaedic related conditions attend morning gym sessions that take place five days a week. The rehabilitation team works with patients to enable them to become as independent as possible through individual treatments, equipment work and functional activities. Nicola MacKinnon, Senior Physiotherapist at Milton Keynes Hospital, said: We are grateful on behalf of the patients, as the biscuits will be much appreciated. Milton Keynes has an ethnically, culturally and racially diverse population. We are keen to work with local communities and other partners to promote good community relations.
