Mother and Child Found in Remains of a Fire in Fishermead |
Firefighters have discovered two bodies which are thought to be a mother and her child while investigating a house fire in Fishermead. They discovered the bodies 36 hours after the fire was reported. During the fire, crews rescued one woman from a bedroom window using a ladder and made efforts to search the house to ensure that all were safely evacuated. Before the search could be completed, a collapse of floors and ceilings severely hampered their rescue efforts.
The house in Fishermead Boulevard, Fishermead, which was occupied by several families, caught fire early on Sunday morning. More than 30 firefighters were called to fight what had rapidly developed into a very severe and dangerous fire. Assistant Chief Fire Officer Des Williamson said: “This is a tragic loss of life and our thoughts are with their relatives and friends. The bodies were not found during the initial searches of the scene as firefighters were hampered by the severity of the fire and the amount of debris that had fallen into the room.” Crews tried to enter the room in which the fatalities occurred from the inside and the outside during the fire. The floor gave way while one of the firefighters was attempting to reach the room from inside the house and he fell through to the floor below. The firefighter was taken to hospital, where he was treated for arm and shoulder injuries before being discharged. Firefighters extended an aluminium ladder to the bedroom window but were beaten back by the flames and extreme heat. Mr Williamson added: “Firefighters searched in the most difficult conditions imaginable. We couldn’t have done any more because of the intensity of the fire and the structural collapse within the building." In line with normal procedure, as well as seeking to establish the cause of the tragedy, Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service is investigating the fire safety precautions at the house, the cause of the firefighter’s injury and the cause of the fire. Thames Valley Police issued a statement. “Thames Valley Police was contacted at 1pm yesterday (06/09/2010) by Bucks Fire and Rescue, reporting that two bodies had been discovered inside a property in Fishermead Boulevard, Milton Keynes.
