With a little help from their friends Milton Keynes Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is set to launch the use of DVDs to help support pregnant women with breastfeeding. The resource provides an additional source of support to mothers who are considering breastfeeding their baby.
‘Friends of Milton Keynes Hospital & Community’, a healthcare based local charity, has raised £300 to fund the purchase of a portable DVD player and a selection of DVDs. The funds will ensure that this new DVD resource will be available to support pregnant and breastfeeding women whilst they are in hospital to provide breastfeeding parent craft at the bedside or in small groups on the ward.
Six different breastfeeding DVDs will be used to educate women by the bed, showing positioning and technique, the baby’s natural ability to independently locate the breast and promote skin-to-skin contact.
The primary aim of using the DVDs in this way is to encourage mums to breastfeed, promote the importance of breastfeeding and ultimately help increase breastfeeding rates.
Suzanne Barber, Lead Breastfeeding Midwife at Milton Keynes Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Research shows that such resources can make a significant difference in breastfeeding success. The new resources will help health professionals show, visually, advice and information in a new way. We hope that watching the DVDs will help women learn more about what breastfeeding is like and if they are unsure about how they are going to feed their baby, will encourage them to breastfeed.
“Only with accurate information and practical support can there be real choice for families about how to feed their babies.”
The DVDs are a valuable resource to help midwives support mothers to breastfeed. They are designed to complement their work, to enrich face to face discussions. The films aim to motivate and enable the next generation of mothers to make a supported choice to breastfeed by providing real-world stories, advice and techniques in an accessible way.
