Together 4 ever!

Adoptive families are needed to help children stay together

Jack and Jill, Kylie and Danni Minogue, Venus and Serena Williams…whatever your age or era, you’re likely to know famous sibling groups, or you’re likely yourself to have a brother or sister.
Our relationships with our brothers and sisters are often the most lasting in our lives.. ‘They’re like peas in a pod’ is often said of siblings!

Imagine therefore being separated from your sibling as a child, and growing up in different families, perhaps miles apart, perhaps never meeting again.

Yet that’s what happens all too often when brothers and sisters need to be adopted. They’re separated not only from their birth parents but from their siblings.

Why? Simply because there are not enough adopters willing to take a sibling group, particularly of more than 2 children, and yet at least 50% of the children referred to The National Adoption Register need to be placed with brothers and sisters.

Here at St Francis’ we’re particularly keen to hear from potential adopters who could consider parenting 2, 3 or even more children! A ready made family!

Parenting is never easy, and being parents to a group of children who will have had some really difficult experiences which have led to them needing to be adopted, is certainly not going to be easy. The rewards however are huge! The 3 children David and Judy adopted had been split up when they first came into care, but seeing them now, adopted into the same family, makes you realise how wrong it would have been to separate them throughout all their childhoods. They argue at times, they often all want Mum’s attention at the same time, but they always look out for one another…and they are ‘like peas in a pod’!  Judy says ‘I can’t bear to think what they’d have lost if we’d only been able to adopt one or even two of them;  they take care of each other, they really do look alike, and as they grow up more and more its important that they share the same past.’

For anyone adopting a child or children, there’s a necessarily rigorous assessment process, and it is quite a long process, but at the end of it, there’s still support available when children join your family and into the future.

If you’d like to know more about adoption, and especially about adopting a ‘ready made family’, why not contact us NOW or come to our next Open Evening on Wednesday 3rd September from 6.30pm – 8.30pm at 48 Newport Road, Woolstone, Milton Keynes.  Contact an adoption worker on 01908 572700 or visit www.sfcs.org.uk for more info.
