Detectives investigating the armed robbery at thecentre:mk in Milton Keynes last Tuesday (1/12), believe the offence may have been committed by an organised crime group travelling from Eastern Europe.
Twenty six similar robberies have occurred in towns across England since April 2005, including an armed robbery at Berry’s jewellers in Windsor in September 2008. Two men from Estonia were convicted for the robbery and sentenced in July this year.
Det Ch Insp Pete Vigurs from Major Crime said: “We are looking at the links between the offence in Milton Keynes and other similar offences which have occurred across the country. We have spoken to other forces and the Serious Organised Crime Group and indications are that the Milton Keynes offence was the latest in this series of robberies.
“We are of course keeping an open mind and we are actively following other lines of investigation including looking at CCTV and possible forensic opportunities. We are liaising with all UK ports. I would like to reassure residents and visitors to Milton Keynes that it is very unlikely that the offenders are local or still in the area.”
Police are still trying to locate one woman, who was in Leslie Davis at the time of the robbery having a battery fitted in her watch.
Det Ch Insp Vigurs added: “The response from public has been excellent and we have been able to build a clear picture of what happened. However we are keen to talk to the woman who was in the shop at the time of the robbery. So far we have been unable to trace her; she is a key witness and I would urge her to contact us.”
