Doric String Quartet
Wednesday 1 February, 8pm (Free pre-concert talk 7pm) Tickets £12.50, £17.50, students £5, family of 4 £30 & £40 Haydn quartet in D Op.20 No.4, Korngold Quartet No.3 in D, Schubert Quartet in D minor D.810 Death & the Maiden This quartet is well-known for its affinity with Haydn’s music and the Op.20 Sun Quartets were a milestone in the composer’s career, at which he reached full maturity in string quartet writing. The Doric has recorded Korngold’s third string quartet to rave reviews, so is no stranger to this piece. Schubert’s masterpiece Death and the Maiden features a heart-rending slow movement based on his song of the same name. It is a piece of great intensity and is one of the best-loved string quartets of all time. “Haydn and the Doric are a perfect match. Danny Bryant’s Redeye Band
Wednesday 1 February, 8.45pm Stage 2 Tickets £10 in advance, £12 on the door Hailed as a young guitar prodigy, Danny began playing guitar aged 15, turning professional just three years later. In the last decade he’s paid his dues, clocking up endless miles and over 2,000 shows around the world. After a decade of hard toil he now gets the recognition he so deserves, acknowledged as one of the cream of the crop of this generation of blues artists and steadily carving a loyal global fan base. Recently the band signed a new record deal with Jazzhaus Records. Patricia Routledge: Facing The Music
In conversation with Edward Seckerson Thursday 2 February, 8pm Tickets £16, £17.50 It is one of the best kept secrets in show business that Patricia Routledge trained as a singer and had considerable success in musical theatre, both here and in the USA. Her many awards include a Tony for her Broadway performance in the musical Darling of the Day (1967) and a Laurence Olivier Award for Leonard Bernstein’s Candide (Old Vic 1989). Her one woman show Come For The Ride toured the UK in 1988 and in 1992 she played Nettie Fowler in the National Theatre’s acclaimed production of Carousel. Writer and broadcaster Edward Seckerson’s diligent discovery of her ‘musical life’ makes for a fascinating evening.
Classic Clapton
Friday 3 February, 8pm Tickets £16.50 The world's Number 1 Eric Clapton tribute returns to The Stables, introducing a new lineup and celebrating 27 years on the road. Featuring front-man Mike Hall (who not only looks like Eric, he sings and plays guitar like him too!) Classic Clapton formed in 1985 and in the past 27 years has become a rock institution. The whole of Clapton's career is covered including Cream, The Yardbirds, Derek & The Dominos and the solo years. The show is a two hour journey through all the hits - Wonderful Tonight, I Shot The Sheriff, Tears in Heaven, Layla and an unplugged segment.
The Galleons
Friday 3 February, 8.45pm Stage 2 Tickets £10 in advance, £12 on the door The Galleons hail from sunny Brighton via London, Lincoln, The Isle of Wight and Latvia. Following an excellent response to the radio play of their first demo, the band set about creating melodic, atmospheric and toe-tappingly catchy songs that blend traditional British folk music, sounds of the 60s folk revival, modern merchants of gloom such as Low and Radiohead and the occasional Latvian farming song. So far they have garnered praise from the south coast’s leading promoters, recorded in a dungeon, played at some great festivals and supported the much-feted Dark Dark Dark.

Tuesday 7 February, 8.45pm Stage 2 Tickets £10 in advance, £12 on the door Trish Clowes has won awards from the Musician’s Benevolent Fund and the PRS for Music Foundation. She released her debut album Tangent in 2010 and received praise for its integrity, luminosity and ambition. In autumn 2010 she toured the UK with her band, generously supported by Jazz Services. Following the success of Tangent, Trish was recently selected by Jamie Cullum, Gilles Peterson and Jez Nelson to perform on the BBC Introducing stage at Cheltenham Jazz Festival 2011. Drumming Workshops – Beginners Conga
Adult/Age15+ Workshop Saturday 11 February 10am - 4pm Course fee £32 For anyone new to hand drumming or interested in finding out more about conga drumming or Latin-American rhythms. We’ll look at basic techniques – including palm/finger movements and hand shapes for producing open tones, bass tones and slap, exercises for developing tone, independence and coordination. We’ll look at some Brazillian and Cuban rhythms, with parts for 1, 2 & 3 drums and how the individual lines fit together with bell patterns and the ‘clave’ rhythm. Ravin 'Raz' Jayasuriya is a professional percussionist and award winning tutor with over 20 years experience specialising in Cuban and Brazilian music. Conga drums kindly provided by Natal Percussion.

Emily released her debut album House of Cards to critical applause in 2011, touring with Chris Difford, Beth Rowley, Amy Wadge, Jon Allen and Gabriella Cilmi. Schoolmate Pete Doherty cited her as the person who first influenced him to pick up a guitar and she supported him at Bournemouth Opera House and the Hackney Empire. The Lightning Seeds – A FEW TICKETS LEFT
Sunday 12 February, 8pm Tickets £25 The Lightning Seeds have been entertaining audiences for over 20 years, and it’s easy to see why when witnessing their unmissable live performance. Ian Broudie conceived the band and penned the majority of the critically acclaimed debut album Cloudcuckooland, featuring the hit single Pure. The band’s 1994 album, Jollification, saw the Lightning Seeds garner the attention they rightly deserved, spawning the hit singles Lucky You, Change, Perfect and Marvellous. In 2006 they released of The Very Best of the Lightning Seeds and in 2010 the band returned to the live arena with a full UK tour.

SambaSunda Quintet

In their latest incarnation, Sambasunda strip down to a quintet, reflecting an enduring tradition of Sundanese music while at the same time creating something fresh, modern and original. The music is centred on the kacapi, a boat-shaped zither whose mellifluous tones have been heard in Sunda (West Java) for centuries. Its haunting and evocative sound connects to the Sundanese soul and poetry, often singing of displacement, longing and melancholy. Using kacapi, violin, suling (flute) and the unique tuned kendang drums to accompany truly stunning singer (and dancer!) The Yuriy Galkin Nonet
Sunday 19 February, 8pm Tickets £12.50 Yuriy Galkin is a brilliant acoustic and electric bass player with a great sound, technique and time feeling. He has gained recognition for his extraordinary compositional skills, winning the 2007 UK Composition Competition (led by Tim Garland) and the prestigious Dankworth Composition Prize for his tune Evolvent in 2010. In 2008, Yuriy formed the Yuriy Galkin Nonet, performing his original compositions. The line-up includes the cream of the jazz crop - Freddie Gavita (trumpet, flugelhorn), Quentin Collins (trumpet), Jon Stokes (trombone), Dafydd Williams (alto sax), George Crowley (tenor sax), Tamar Osborn (baritone and soprano saxes, bass clarinet), John Turville (piano) and Dave Hamblett (drums). A pivotal figure in UK pub rock, punk rock and new wave, Lowe has recorded a string of well-reviewed solo albums. Along with vocals, Lowe plays guitar, bass guitar, piano and harmonica. He is best known for his songs (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding (a hit for Elvis Costello) Cruel to Be Kind (a US Top 40 single) and I Love the Sound of Breaking Glass. In March 2009 he released a 49 track CD/DVD compilation of songs spanning his entire career, entitled Quiet Please... The New Best of Nick Lowe.
