TIME AND FIRE DESTROY ALL THINGS - ART EXHIBITION until 7 September 2008

Milton Keynes Contemporary – WHITEWALL

Over 1 million people have viewed art space Milton Keynes Contemporary – WHITEWALL in regional shopping destination thecentre:mk since its inception two years ago. To commemorate the two year milestone the latest exhibition is of striking images and photography by artist Nigel Grimmer alongside this a permanent display has been created of all the catalogues from previous WHITEWALL exhibitions.

Started in June 2006 Milton Keynes Contemporary - WHITEWALL features commissioned artists who have produced work which is exhibited in thecentre:mk. WHITEWALL aims to break down the perceived elitism surrounding contemporary fine art providing a platform to exhibit to a wider general audience. Over its two year lifespan the footfall past the WHITEWALL location has been over 1 Million and it has exhibited work from emerging to internationally renowned artists including Maslen & Mehra and explored mediums such as sculpture, poetry, photography and more traditional canvasses.

As part of WHITEWALL’s ongoing support of the artists’ development each exhibition at Milton Keynes Contemporary - WHITEWALL has benefited from a catalogue publication of the work. Each catalogue features images from the exhibition and includes text from respected writers, journalists and critics including cultural commentator Judith Palmer and writer Edward Lucie-Smith.

“thecentre:mk is thrilled to be involved with WHITEWALL and provide artists with another way of displaying their work to the general public,” commented Jackie Tracey, Events Manager at thecentre:mk. “What started with Cnyht Bachelor in 2006 has blossomed into a space where the shoppers of Milton Keynes and the surrounding region can stop and appreciate some of the strong up and coming artists the UK has to offer.”

The two year anniversary exhibition features Nigel Grimmer a multimedia artist who selects the most appropriate medium for each of his projects. ‘Time and Fire Destroy all Things’ is a collection of photographic images which strike a fine balance between being touching and daft using popular props to build a strong narrative connecting with the viewing public. Each image is supplied with copy that provides an ironic twist encouraging the audience to question modern society.

A catalogue of this project is available with text by artist and writer Joanne Lee, Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at Nottingham Trent University.
