Q

I'm trying to keep my weekly food costs down, but I do like to buy good quality ingredients. Which products could I afford to opt for cheaper options and not compromise on taste?

A

Standard store cupboard essentials are the ingredients that you can buy cheaply without really compromising on taste. Fresh meat and fish should, and probably will cost more because they are not a commodity, and more of treat.

If you replace meat with other types of protein, you'll save yourself a lot of money.

If you fill your larder with some essentials, they'll always be at hand to make a meal. With this in mind, here is a list of ingredients that I buy cheaply (shop own brand value) and always have squirreled away:
Tins of tomatoes, kidney beans, chick peas, butter beans, sweetcorn, tuna, olive or rapeseed oil, mackerel fillets, coconut milk, curry paste, tomato puree, self raising flour, plain flour, caster sugar, bread flour, various dried spices, dried mixed herbs, salt and pepper, pasta, rice, tomato ketchup, mustard, soy sauce. Fresh food to include, potatoes, onion, garlic, cheese, butter, milk and eggs.
