West Side Story Review 15th july 2009

Milton keynes TheatreI’ve never seen West Side story before but very familiar with the story and music, Always remember my mum trying to get me to watch it at Christmas time on the TV but as any kid I went upstairs to watch Wallace and Gromit but in the background could here my mum bellowing out songs like Maria I feel pretty and somewhere!!

I thoroughly enjoyed the dance routines and music but some of the acting was a bit below par for a show of this size.

The set was very effective with high rise balconies and changing black and white images of New York in the backdrop.

A fantastic vocal performance from the cast and the mesmerizing voice of Sofia Escobar’s Maria, harmonizing with Daniel Koeks (Tony) very powerful but soft voice was fantastic, Anita played by Jayde Westaby was exceptional and by far the best actress on stage in my opinion.
There was a bit of a lull at the most tragic moment of the show when chino from the sharks comes out of the shadows and fires a gun shot at tony while he is in Maria’s arms and the audience including myself jumps out of our skins which turned into a giggle.

All in all this is a fantastic musical and a classic story ,If you are a fan of the stage show or film I highly recommend you go and see this show.
